The Mommy Makeover

By Ramsey J. Choucair, M.D., F.A.C.S

The term “Mommy Makeover” describes a group of plastic surgical procedures performed to restore a more normal appearance to the abdomen and breasts following the changes that may occur following childbirth.

Post-pregnancy changes may result in looseness of the abdominal skin, and bulging of the abdominal muscles.   Additionally, breast tissue may shrink, leading to a smaller breast volume and an undesirable sagging of the breast.

Individuals that experience significant body distortion often desire surgical intervention to restore a more normal appearance.

A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty procedure tightens the abdominal muscles, eliminates exercise and diet-resistant fatty bulges, and removes loose skin.

Breast enhancement procedures include restoring breast volume (augmentation or reduction) and lifting drooping tissue (mastopexy). Differences among individuals make general recommendations imprecise and procedures are tailored to meet each person’s reasonable expectations.

Patients are encouraged to obtain more than one opinion and proceed after confirming that their expectations are reasonable and achievable.  In most instances “what to do” is more relevant than “how it is done”.  Remember, you are relying on the JUDGEMENT of the physician as the most important ingredient for a successful outcome.

Fortunately, there are predictable and safe surgical options to restore body contour to those mothers who desire a “makeover”.  Regardless, we agree with the premise of a popular song that reminds us “most mama’s oughta qualify for sainthood”.
